Prairie Hills & Lakes Tour
This tour is design for family and friends and explores the secret beauty of the state's northeast prairie hills and lakes region. Called the Coteau des Prairies which sits on a 200 mile plateau, numerous attractions are offered including mysterious Sica Hollow State Park, inspiring Nicollet Tower and historic Fort Sisseton. Our route includes miles of rolling scenic roadway of lakes, prairies and wooded ravines and valleys. We will stay at the peaceful Prairie Sky Guest and Game Ranch which sits on 2000
acres on the northern edge of the Coteau with a view of two states that gives a feeling of being able to touch the stars. The intimate 2 bedroom cabins with sleeping loft are ideal for family and friends and why parties of 4-6 are perfect. Our host, Bruce and Corrine Prins will provide us with ranch style hospitality and family style meals. If you desire, other amenities like horseback riding and fishing are available for an additional charge.
- Friday, Arrival - We will meet people at the Prairie Sky Guest and Game Ranch for lunch at noon and introductions.
- We will fit people with bikes and take a 13 mile bike ride to Sica Hollow State Park, with deep, thickly forested ravines on the eastern slopes of the Praire Coteau.
- Named by the Dakota Sioux and pronounced (she-cha) meaning evil or bad, many legends recall mysterious things happening where it is believed supernatural forces are supposely at work. An interpretive nature hike will bring these legends to life.
- We will return by van to the guest ranch for social time and a delicious family style dinner.
- Saturday, Buffalo Lakes Tour - 20 - 34 miles with lots of flexibility
- Following breakfast we will drive to the jumping off place for the Buffalo Lakes Dis
trict. This tour will twist and turn between a dozen lakes and potholes for 14 miles where we will stop for a picnic lunch at Pickerl Lake Recreational Area.
- After lunch, we will head north toward Sisseton through rolling prairie and past Drywood and Whitestone Lakes for 15 miles. Those who wish to get in the support van to shorten the mileage can easily do so.
- The last 4 miles of the tour is a thriller down hill to the Nicollet Tower, where we will get a breathtaking view of the great prairie valley to the north carved by the glazier some 40,000 thousand years ago.
- We will return to the guest ranch in the van for another social hour and delicious dinner.
- Sunday, Fort Sisseton Tour - Standard route is 21 miles with a longer option of 35 miles for the hardy rider.
- We will drop off those seeking the longer route at Hillhead, a few miles from the Prairie Sky Guest Ranch where they will ride 24 miles to Fort Sisseton Historic State Park..
- Others with will depart from Roy Lake State Park and ride 13 miles to Ft. Sisseton where the two groups will meet, have a chance to tour the fort, and eat a picnic lunch
- The tour continues through the heart of lake country for 8 miles to the village of Eden where the tour ends.
- People will return to their parked cars at Lake City.
