Gray Arrow Tour Levels

Graded tour levels ensure we have an experience for people of all ages, abilities, backgrounds and interest. Most of our tours have the flexibility to be at two levels depending on the rider's choice.

Easy - specifically designed for entry level and very relaxed riding to allow you to gain experience and confidence for on-road touring. Daily mileage is a minimum of 22 miles. This requires a minimum baseline of fitness, exercising twice a week prior to the tour with preferably two 20 mile trips under the belt. An Easy + tour may have a few extra miles with some sustained climbing compared to the easy level.

Moderate - Characterized by moderately hilly terrain of gradual inclines of no greater than 6% and less than 1-2 miles in length. Mileage is between 30-45 miles a day. Requires an average level of fitness, exercising three-four times a week and at least a half a dozen 25-35 mile rides, preferably in moderately hilly terrain, prior to the tour. A Moderate + tour may include inclines of over 6%, inclines of over 2 miles and elevation gains of over 2500 feet a day.

Challenging - Characterized by consistently hilly terrain (elevation gains of over 3000 feet per day) of sustained inclines of over 6% with distances of 40-60 miles per day. Requires a strong level of fitness exercising three-five times per week prior to the tour and comfortable with 40-60 mile days in hilly terrain. A Challenging + tour might involve more than 60 miles a day with long sustained inclines.

  Arrival, Parking, Final Day

Our Lodges and B&B's have ample parking for your car and you are welcome to drive your vehicle to our first night's accommodation for our weekend tours. Our mid week tours have a designated meeting place where cars are left for the entire tour.  (We will return you to your vehicle on the final tour day for those tours that do not end where your car is parked.) We will also provide a shuttle service at approximately 1:30 p.m. on your arrival day from the Rapid City Airport to the start of our tours and will return you to the Airport or a Rapid City Motel by 6:00 p.m. on our final tour day. We do not recommend anyone flying out on the final tour day of the Black Hills Classic nor do we guarantee arrival to the airport by 6:00 p.m.

  Pets

Some of our B&Bs have family pets. Let us know if you have any relevant allergies. Also, even non-riding guests cannot bring a pet on our tours.

  Children

Children 10 years old or older, who are experienced cyclists and who use a 21 gear bike, are very welcome on our tours if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.  Our smallest rental bike will fit a small person 4 feet 8 inches and taller, so if your child is shorter, you must provide your own bike. If you have thoughts of pulling a child with a tag along half-bike, please contact us so we can discuss it.

On our Mickelson Trail Catered Camping Tours, children 2 years of age and older are welcome providing parents are 100% responsible for their travel and care. Guides do not provide companion tow service or child care services for children. We do rent 7 speed half bikes on a first come first serve basis.

Renting a Bike from Dakota Bike Tours

You can rent an excellent 24 gear Specialized cross bike with straight handle bars from us. Expertly maintained, they come equipped with a front handlebar bag, rear seat bag, water bottle, mirror, and toe straps. We will put on your pedals and seat on our bike if you bring them with you. Bike rental prices are:
  • 3-Day/2-Night tour:   $50
  • 4-Day/3-Night tour:   $75 Worry free bikes.
  • 6-Day/5-Night tour:   $125
  • 7-day/6-Night tour:   $150
  • $25 per day for Mickelson Trail

  Bringing Your Own Bike

Hybrid or Cross Bikes with 32c tires or larger are recommended on our Black Hills tours (Northern Hills, Classic and Monument) because we utilize the Mickelson Trail on part of each tour which has a hard limestone crush rock for its surface. Our 32 - 35c tire size works very well on both the Mickelson Trail and on paved surfaces. You are welcome to bring your own bike if it has 21 gears or higher and has recently been tuned up. If your tire size is smaller than 32c, you may wish to use one of our bikes on those days we use the Mickelson Trail at $25 per day. However, you will need to make arrangements prior to the start of the trip. Recumbent bikes are welcome, but guest with long wheel base recumbents have not done well on our tours because of the hilly terrain.

  Helmets

Quality helmets are made available to you at no charge. The use of helmets while riding is required on our tours.

  Referrals

We would be pleased to provide you with names of people who have been on one of our tours.

  Confirmation Packet

We will send you a Confirmation Packet with information about your trip as soon as we receive your deposit. Included in the packet are:
  • Tour Route Information
  • Registration and Release of Liability Form
  • Bike Rental Agreement Form, if applicable
  • Trip Cancellation Insurance application form
  • Literature about the places you will be staying at including directions on how to get there
