MICK BLAST SUMMARY
Consider us as your support team for this 2 day 108 mile ride. We have designed the logistics to be at a minimum so you can focus on enjoying your ride. We use one campsite for two nights just south of Hill City where you will leave your car. (Although the listed price is for camping, you can upgrade to a cabin if you wish.) Your group arrives the night before, we help you set up your tents, we serve you dinner, load up your bikes, and then following breakfast the next morning we shuttle you 45 miles to Deadwood where the trail begins. You will ride your bike 52 miles to return to your camp, but we support you along the way with lunch and frequent contact to make sure you and your equipment are functioning well. That evening you will be served a great dinner as well as a hot breakfast the next morning. We will be glad to take down your tent to allow you to start your remaining 57 miles as soon as you can. It is important to get an early start so you can finish in the early afternoon before it really gets hot. The Southern Hills are dryer and hotter than the rest of the hills are. Like the first day, we support you with lunch and frequent contacts, and will shuttle you from Edgemont back to the campsite south of Hill City where your car is parked.
Arrival: Your group will meet us at the Crooked Creek Resort 3 miles south of Hill City on hwy 385 in time for dinner and to set up your tent if you choose to camp.
Day 1 - 52 miles with 15 miles of uphill:
- After breakfast on the first riding day, we will transport you to the trailhead in Deadwood at 4,600 ft. where you will immediately start climbing for 6 miles. It will moderate for 4 miles, and then you will climb another 5 miles prior to hitting the high mark of the trail, at 6,250 ft.
- You will then begin a11 mile descent to Rochford for a picnic lunch where you will marvel at this historic mining town and have a chance to visit the Moonshine Gulch Saloon and the “Small of America”. Both establishments have their own charm and character and are at polar opposites.
- Following lunch, you will descend another 8 miles before starting a 6 mile climb that is not difficult but annoying. The support van will make contact with you prior and after this climb.
- The last 11 miles is downhill where you will stop in Hill City prior to ending your day’s ride at the Crooked Creek Resort for a hot shower and a catered dinner.
Day 2 - 57 miles with 11 miles of uphill:
- After an early breakfast on day 2, you will start a 6 mile climb where you will get a great view of Crazy Horse memorial.
- At this point you will descend past some huge granite outcroppings and ride 6 miles to Custer, where you have to make a must stop at the Bakers Bakery and Café.
- You will continue for 12 miles, mostly downhill to Pringle where you can opt to have an early lunch at the Hitchrail Bar & Restaurant. This part of the trail begins an unique transition of more open meadows and isolated granite outcroppings.
- Following lunch, you have 30 miles of downhill plus 2 uphill to complete the ride to Edgemont. You will continue the transition to the prairie's edge.
- The last 16 miles is very remote and passes through a spectacular canyon before dumping into the Cheyenne River Valley. The support van will make contact at the beginning of this section and once in the middle.
- The ride traditionally ends at the City Park in Edgemont. But you will more than like go immediately to the local café for ice cream while the van driver loads up your bikes.
- The van ride back to your car is an hour. If all goes well, expect to be back by 3:30 or 4:00 p.m.
